Notice: Cucumber Recall

Dear Parent or Guardian, 09/11/2015

This is to inform you that recalled cucumbers potentially contaminated with Salmonella were offered at Algoma Elementary School on Friday September 4th, 2015. As soon as the school was notified of the recall, the cucumbers were immediately removed from food service.

Below you will find a link to a Consumer Advisory from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection related to the food recall as well as link to more information about Salmonella. Please read these carefully.

If your child ate cucumbers, or other fresh produce from the cafeteria, on Friday September 4th, 2015, we encourage you to watch for symptoms that may be related to this exposure. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most individuals recover without treatment.

Symptoms usually begin 12 to 72 hours after consumption of the contaminated food, but less commonly can occur 7 to 14 days later. If your child develops any of these symptoms in the next 2 weeks, we recommend that you consult your family healthcare provider and bring this letter to their attention.

Any students with signs and symptoms should also be reported to the school office and should not attend school until they are symptom free for 24 hours without the use of medications. The most important way to prevent transmission of Salmonella within the home or school is to practice good hand-washing after using the bathroom.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Kewaunee County Health Department @ 920-388-7160.
