Risk of Sport Specialization/Injury Prevention

There are many athletes and parents that believe if they specialize during early adolescents that they have a better chance of playing at the next level.  Statistics show that as many as 48% of athletes are specializing in 1 sport, some athletes are not even competing for their schools anymore and choosing to only compete in club sports.  Research continues to show that injury rates are higher in athletes that specialize versus athletes that compete in multiple sports.  Athletes and parents need educate themselves of the risks of sport specialization and the guidelines that they can follow to prevent injuries form overuse.

Charlie DeCleene is a physical therapist and team facilitator with Bellin Health Titletown Sports Medicine and Orthopedics.  Charlie works with a variety of orthopedic conditions involving all of the joints of the body and the spine.  He specializes in sports rehabilitation and video movement analysis.  Charlie is part of the Movement Performance Lab team where the focus is harnessing technology to assist in assessing and treating movement-related conditions.
