Lettuce will be available today and also on Friday (from 7:30 - ?) at the Wellness Center.
Thank you to all who have given donations for the lettuce that has been offered at the Wellness Center. We were able to purchase the organic soil amendments that our raised gardens needed. As you can see in the photos below, the Wolves and Pups are very excited about gardening up at the high school this summer. ESI will also be coming up to work in the elevated garden beds.

I had an amazing group of student helpers today with the abundant lettuce harvest.

I will be placing the extra lettuce in a blue cooler near the entrance of the Algoma Community Wellness Center at the High School. If you would like a free bag of lettuce, simply look for the cooler and sign near the check-in desk on Tuesday, April 5th.

If you would like to leave a donation for the lettuce, it would be greatly appreciated. Funds raised will help cover seed cost for our summer gardening program.

A warm "THANK YOU" to those who left a donation last week. I truly appreciate the support that you show our program and am happy to offer our extras to you!

Algoma NOW Garden Program

This year we had a team of middle school students that participated in the NASA/Fairchild Botanical Garden Grow Beyond Earth Challenge. Students were given the opportunity to grow 3 varieties of lettuce in a "Veggie" chamber (similar to the one that was initially used on the International Space Station). Students collected data and shared it with a team of real scientists. In our second trial, we were able to come up with our own experiment. The students chose to grow them under a 24-hour light cycle for the 28 day period. The results were AMAZING! In contrast to popular belief that all plants need a period of darkness to rest from photosynthesis, we found that the radishes continued to grow to become approximately 3 times the size of our first trial radishes. Students are not preparing to present their findings in a virtual Student Research Symposium in April.
